Trip Hop vs Hip Hop. What’s the difference and why does one care? Besides googling the answer which results in a good amount of–ah fuck it.. via wiki:
Trip hop is a genre of electronic music that originated in the early 90’s in the UK. ..the term was first used by the British music media as a way to describe the more experimental variant of breakbeat emerging from the Bristol Sound scene, which contained influences of soul, funk and jazz.
It has been described as a “fusion of hip hop and electronica until neither genre is recognisable”. Trip hop music fuses several styles and has much in common with other genres; it has several qualities similar to ambient music, and its drum-based breakdowns share characteristics with hip hop.It also contains elements of R&B, duband house, as well as other electronic music. Trip hop can be highly experimental.
So it boils down to instrumental downtempo breakbeats with the occasional featured lyricist. Not too bad eh? Origins on different sides of the pond, and you don’t always have vocals. If you can handle that w/ a slight mix of experimental/turntablism… then have a run at trip hop.
How convenient that I’d go on this trip hop rant and have a fantastic new track to showcase? I’d say it was expected, that’s kind of the point? But hey, if you were paying attention to any of the Coachella happenings this last week, you’d have seen Old Man Bernie himself introduce our ‘feat’ spot on today’s track, Run the Jewels. The hip-hop supergroup includes Bernie’s radio friend and supporter Killer Mike. So like I said, TOPICAL.
And first billing is DJ Shadow, who himself has spent five (5) years since releases. He dropped his second single for this summer’s new album, The Mountain Will Fall. Excited? Yup.
Bonus: A very supporting father making sure his son knows what true hip-hop sounds like
