As a freshman entry into the soquitcherbitchen kpop catalog, I’m more worried this song will be passed up as a senseless pop trend and not as the artistic accomplishment it deserves.
The song–a combination of classical orchestral staccato beats with playful traveling electronic undertones, crunchy fast moving baselines, and dramatic swelling choruses paired with the kind of vocal range and strength rarely seen in the genre.. regardless of being able to understand a damn thing these women are singing, that isn’t the point. Pop music is meant to get lost in, to bob and weave with the universal language of minor thirds and bridges that overwhelm you, being struck in awe how the same chromatic scale can surprise you once again.
And if the song wasn’t drowning enough, the video gives us impeccable style, subtle yet powerful choreography, and Seulgi’s shoulders like wuuuuuuuuuuuut.
Lets rewind a quick minute. kpop is fucking here, right? Headlining SNL, topping world Billboard charts, being praised as greatest pop albums ever.. a multi billion dollar industry churning out music videos, celebrity icons, and a (ho-hum) 20 million subscribing dance choreography channels.
this has been my bunny trail process lately:
1) stumble upon catchy kpop song on Spotify
2) find the music video (mv) on YouTube
3) love it
4) search for reaction videos
5) love it more
6) research the group profile
7) find a lyric video of the song
8) try to learn and match the lyrics with the group members
9) re-watch the music video and reaction videos 20 more times
10) have the song be the most listened to song on my personal Spotify for 2020
11) repeat step 1
