The Avalanches + Frank Sinatra /triphop

An ever epic return. The rumors and myths have existed for years. And recent precursors regarding tour dates and collaborations ignited the interwebs with the real possibility that a new Avalanches album might be juuust over the horizon. But now that hype has /finally/ manifested into something tangible. Not just in an official announcement of a new album release (Wildflower, July 8th, Modular/XL), but also a new single and an incredibly twisted accompanying music video.

“Frankie Sinatra”, the first single off The Avalanches forthcoming new album Wildflower, turns out to feature samples and beats that The Avalanches have been utilizing and working on for years in their live sets. The lead sample in the track is from “Bobby Sox Idol” by Wilmoth Houdini, as well as a fittingly melodic interlude of “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music. The vocals, featuring both Danny Brown and MF DOOM, were laid out specifically for the track and encourage the crazed carnival-like mood of the jumping brass and beats.

It doesn’t have to be a world changing event. Just new Avalanches is enough to whet the appetite until July. The vintage feel here doesn’t over-eagerly pierce your chest with uninspired bass and trends. Instead, “Frankie Sinatra” guides you directly into the storm, instead of being the storm itself. A most welcome easement for the rabid yearning from 16 years of silence.
